SDL Trados Technologies were delighted to sponsor the annual International Terminology Summer School (TSS), which took place at the University of Applied Sciences, Cologne on 16th – 20th July 2007.
The theme for the course this year was ‘Terminology Management: Theory, Practice and Applications’. Nearly 60 attendees from over 20 different countries enjoyed interactive training from some of the most renowned experts in the industry: Klaus-Dirk Schmitz, Sue Ellen-Wright, Heribert Picht, Gerhard Budin, Frieda Steurs and Anja Drame. Topic sessions included introduction to terminology theory, creating a database for terminology work, economic issues of terminology management and various case studies.
The organisers, Infoterm (www.infoterm.info) and TermNet (www.termnet.org), have been running TSS annually for nearly 25 years. It is becoming an increasingly popular event (as demonstrated by the fantastic delegate feedback) for individuals from language service providers (LSPs), organizations and universities around the world to come together to learn and discuss the latest trends of thought and best practice for terminology management.
TSS was created as a result of increasing demand from students and professionals requiring a terminology qualification. In addition to certification, the course also offers a broad introduction into the industry, highlighting the latest thinking and ideas. The structure of the course has been designed in a flexible way so that attendees can benefit from lectures and group discussions whilst having the time to raise issues relevant to them.
TSS conforms entirely to the industry standards in its approach to terminology. Nearly all the trainers work within the ISO/TC 37 “Terminology and other language and content resources” standards committee.
